The great British Brexit robbery: how our democracy was hijacked by Carole Cadwalladr
“We are in the midst of a massive land grab for power by billionaires via our data. Data which is being silently amassed, harvested and stored. Whoever owns this data owns the future.”

Read this. One of the most important pieces of journalism on #SurveillanceCapitalism this year.
Sometimes async communications like email are so frustrating. Makes me wonder if anybody is out there.
Now to clean the house, which I put off to meet the May 1 deadline.
Some pretty fun stuff happened today: We relaunched https://foredesign.co for #may1reboot and were featured in Dribbble's newsletter! Feels good when your hard work is recognized.
These pretzels are making me thirsty!
Dear toot.cafe friends,
Our community is lovely, and it's thanks to @nolan's generosity that toot.cafe exists. He not only took time to set up and manage this instance, he's personally paying for our hosting costs. While this is kind, it isn't sustainable.
If you're interested and able, please contribute a small amount to help him out. Even the value of one coffee a month would be super helpful.

Thank you, and thanks to those already supporting. 😍
So, I was working in Atom and on save it reverted the file 24 hours?! Anyone experience anything like that before?
Feeling good after what I would consider a pretty good (re-)launch for Shubox. So thankful to have worked with so many brilliant people in its short lifetime.
Grateful for @dan, Amy, Kyle, and all the friends who've been so encouraging. 💜
For any frontend devs looking to speed up the Mastodon JS codebase, I've put together a summary of the perf analysis I did last weekend:

Still lots of work to do! I hope to contribute myself once I have more time. 😅
Another delicious morning loaf. https://toot.cafe/media/0A-mlZR_tN365AC3NYQ

Folks,
I've just set up a web server for myself at DigitalOcean. They sent me a link which will give $10 in credits for anyone who uses it.
This value is enough for you to try the service for a month or two, depending on the setup.
Here is the link if you are interested:
I just learned how we wound-up with the term "webmaster", and now I plan to use it daily.
"Due to the RFC 822 requirement for establishing a "postmaster" email address for the single point of contact for the email administrator of a domain, the "webmaster" address and title were unofficially adopted by analogy for the website administrator. RFC 2142 turned this common practice into a standard."
I would like to give some credit and props to all the developers who have worked on building #Mastodon /GS/OS.
Everyone talks about the missing features, but this is a pretty well made, well designed and largely bug-free product, for what I assume has largely been a volunteer effort.
Remember that the competitors have huge staffs of full time devs hired specifically to work on that product, so there's a big difference in resources. #Mastodev
On birdsite I ask a question and then... silence. When I ask a question of the fediverse I get a ton of helpful answers. Thanks everyone!
Ok tooters, what are your best front-end resources for beginners? I'm teaching a class for people that have just learned HTML/CSS and a bit of JS and would love to share how you stay up to date and where you look for help when you're stuck. 💓
If you want to make sure I close your website instead of leaving it open while I need to do something else, make sure to have some stuff moving around. That works 100% of the time.

One of the most difficult things about doing design work is the fact that there are some people out there willing to con their clients with pre-made templates that *look* like a lot of work but are devoid of actual thinking.
It's such a disservice to the profession.
