All the big shifts in the tech industry recently seem to have been foretold by Tim Wu's "The Master Switch" (goodreads.com/book/show/820108). Small companies get gobbled up by bigger ones or obliterated through copying. Incumbents are strong and getting stronger. Network effects create a lot of winner-take-all scenarios.

@dajbelshaw Nolan left Twitter & even switched to Lineage OS few months back in an attempt to wean himself off of Google/Apple services and silos (see nolanlawson.com/2017/11/27/liv ), he was also complaining how non-trivial this is, even for highly technical folks

We've spent an awesome few days together in the #Netherlands planning #MozFest 2018 in London late October.

I gave my 1st talk because I was thrown into it by a previous manager! Never thought of myself as the speaker type, but it didn't go too terribly & actually kind of enjoyed it. Realised I had other things I could share about & that it was a great way to keep learning new things!

All of this is to say: maybe someone who reads this might find they like speaking too! Maybe try it sometime, even if you don't think you are the type for it (e.g. too shy / introverted). You might surprise yourself!

Started making a list of browser bugs I've run into while working on Pinafore… the web is still kind of a minefield. 11 bugs across all four of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari, and I know I'm probably forgetting some. (Nor am I counting bugs I was already aware of and consciously avoided.) gist.github.com/nolanlawson/83

@nolan that's some A+ mastodon-hacking, all right, but you *weren't supposed to start without me*, maaan! :'DD <3

Pinafore is an alternative web client for Mastodon that I'm releasing today. The goal is to make a lightweight standalone web app that can plug into multiple instances, with a UI focused on speed and simplicity.

Pinafore is still beta-quality in places, but it's already the main client @ElfLord and I have been using for the past few weeks. I've been working on it since the start of this year. Hope y'all like it. 😊
