Now, how in hell do I get all these observations and things I tried into *one* comprehensible bug report? ;) And yes, that's a retorical question.

2. If I then want to tell Enigmail to use a different key pair, as the pep.security website mentions at one spot for Outlook, it creates entries that turn off pEp mode alltogether. pEp mode in principle still works, if you force it on, but once you do that, it .. guess what ... creates another new key pair. Halleluja!

I realise mine is probably a bit of a special case, wanting to start with a fresh install but an existing key ring, but hey...

Good morning! Last night, while almost falling asleep, it hit me what *could* be the cause of my yesterday's demise with Enigmail. I think it's a combination of two things.

1. Enigmail doesn't take into account that someone could already have a key pair and still want to use pEp. Instead, when installing, even though keys are there, the first thing it does is create a new key pair for each account (not identity) in TB.

More progress. Since I have one machine where Enigmail does automatically go into pEp mode, I compared settings through about:config. Turns out my initial attempt to tell pEp which private key pair to use caused a lot of entries to be created that caused Enigmail to think that pEp was not wanted. Deleting those on the second machine restored pEp in automatic mode.
Enigmail also has a key pair creation fetish. I think I had 3 or 4 automatically created at 1 point.

On a slightly different tangent: I also found that, in Thunderbird's Privacy settings, I can force-enable junior mode. That's the pEp mode. However, when I let Enigmail decide for itself if it should use that mode or not, it will not choose it by default no matter what I do. And I've tried it, pEp mode seems to work, with the same recipient, it offers me to pEp handshake. Hahah! This is still very confusing.

Further progress... I've found that in the individual account settings, signing and encryption by default is off. Why that is I don't know. And I thought that these would only be applied if standard measures like looking up a public key for the recipient, failed...

Neither of these menu items has a check mark beside it, looking to me like it won't encrypt, and won't sign. And I just, for the life of me, cannot figure out why it's doing that...

I got a reply on the forum suggesting I distill the keys down to the one I really want to use. That's all fine and such, but the UI still confuses me more than PGP has in almost 20 years. For example, if I have someone's public key, and have Enigmail set to the default settings, sending a message to this person *looks* to me like Enigmail wants to neither sign nor encrypt the message to that person. The menu items say Sign (automatic), and Encrypt (automatic).

OK, after tinkering a lot with different options, I went back to an old friend, Thunderbird.

And as I am a fan of encrypted e-mail, if possible, I also installed Enigmail again. But not having used it for at least half a year, I was surprised by new things such as pEp support. Since early February, I‘ve been on a quest to lose weight. I was at almost 130 kilograms, which is almost double the weight I *should* have. Since then it has been 16 weeks, and I‘ve lost 22 of those kilos, with about 30 to 35 more to go.

Good morning from Germany! And welcome to all the new followers I got over the past couple of days! :)

I am really curious how the French government will get away with using Matrix/Riot in all their govt agencies. They'll either have to ignore people with disabilities, or they'll have to contribute a huge amount of work to the Matrix project, both the web front-end and the iOS and Android clients. Because for a blind screen reader user, Matrix is far from being usable efficiently right now.
And no, I don't have time to contribute to all of these projects. I can't fight all fights.

Slight update to my profile's bio. It was the first bio I wrote on Mastodon, and from today's view, it didn't have all the info I'd like ti to have now. Rectified that.
