being on #mastodon feels like moving into the small town in Totoro but instead of farmers everyone is a developer
I've always been skeptical of the JS community's mania for Babel plugins and compile-to-JS languages, and honestly, working with the Mastodon codebase and trying to shrink a 2.6MB JS bundle, I feel like my worst fears have been realized.
I've decomposed all of Mastodon's Babel presets into these plugins. If I remove a single one, I get some inscrutable error apparently caused by some other plugin in the pipeline. Feels like a big Jenga tower. 😞 #MastodonPerf
Okay here's a real toot that you can actually boost without people looking at you like you're crazy.

The past few weeks (okay, ever since the schism) I've felt kind of disenchanted by Mastodon and especially its development environment, and I wrote an essay about why that is. It's long, but if you're interested in Mastodon's history or politics you should give it a read.
Open source maintainers should diffuse responsibility early, and often. Add new contributors, give contributors push rights, empower existing contributors to keep contributing.
It's hard, because we start open source projects usually because we like to write code for them. But once it becomes a community, our priorities need to shift from coding to helping others code. It's uncomfortable.

The monitors, the speakers, the mouse and the keyboard are connected to my desktop computer which is located under the desk. And I sometimes use my laptop as a third screen. 😊
Also, please note my snoopy piggy bank which is a central part of my coding station. 😅

The confidence that I'll eventually reach the solution is the only thing that's making me not loose hope while tackling this bug. 🐞
I'm not going to say I don't get anything out of birdsite anymore but the signal/noise ratio on toot.cafe is off the charts for me.
When you complain about the way an #instance is run when you are not helping to run, fund, or otherwise operate it, you're missing the point of a federal system. Instances are private organizations run by public-goods providers. They and theirs get to set the rules. It's decentralization, not Rule by the Loudest.
@NattyGov yes! I've almost disappeared from the birdsite. And the first app of the day I open isn't the birdsite anymore but Mastodon.
I love the way people talk with each other a lot more over here. They help each other in stead of judging one another. But some day that'll disappear too I guess but I hope it will take some time.

Thought I'll check out the federated timeline....and BOOM, I am in Japan all of a sudden!
Do I open source because I want to help out, or do I pull request because some code on the internet is wrong and I can't stand that?
Well, looks like nothing prevents tooting from an old raspberry pi 🤓
Just joined Mastodon. Seems like a very friendly and fun place! 😃 #introduction
