"Privacy on Mastodon" webinista.com/updates/mastodon

Another great post from @webinista. Privacy is one of the things that sets Mastodon apart, but we should also be talking about the inherent challenges that come with federation.

Also: the fact that Mastodon deletes image metadata and doesn't sell your data to advertisers is something we don't talk about nearly enough.

Besides the creepiness factor, there's also the fact that Twitter/Facebook are just one data breach away from all that info leaking somewhere. Better to never gather the data in the first place.

Maciej Ceglowski is relevant here: idlewords.com/talks/haunted_by

"If you can get away with it, just don't collect it! Just like you don't worry about getting mugged if you don't have any money, your problems with data disappear if you stop collecting it."

@nolan as @dredmorbius is fond of saying, "data are liability".

I've been trying to find some discussion about integrating a distributed ledger identity service with Mastodon, to solve the identity problem, but coming up empty.

@nolan

Btw, if anyone has not read yet "Superintelligence
The Idea That Eats Smart People" by the same author, it's a classic:

@Tryphon Yeah I enjoyed that one too! :)

@nolan Gene Spafford, Bruce Schneier, and Eben Moglen are among the many (though luminary) who've made the same point.

Cory Doctorow, from whom I believe my #DataAreLiability is cribbed from.

@nolan Honestly, the tech industry should just do everything Maciej Ceglowski says they should.

Some may wish to exclude the ongoing ridicule of venture capitalists but I say let's do that too.
