Idea: create an invite-only instance for Mastodon admins where we can talk about admin stuff, and where we also run the bleeding-edge version of Mastodon so we can find issues early.

@nolan This is a cool idea. What poor soul will admin it?

@foozmeat That sounds like a Bertrand Russell paradox

@nolan if the admin of the admin instance was not a member of the instance itself :)

@nolan For #MastoAdmins discussion, there is a Matrix chat: riot.im/app/#/room/#mastodon_a (you should join!)

An always-bleeding-edge instance would be useful! There are some admins that already immediately upgrade to bleeding-edge anyways though.

@chris Yeah I saw there's the Matrix chat, and there's also an IRC channel and a mailing list. But… I kinda want to use Mastodon for everything. 😁 Also if the "bleeding-edge instance" were where valuable discussion about Mastodon admin stuff happened, then it'd be good incentive for us to dogfood and discover bugs earlier.

@chris @nolan If someone offers to admin such an instance, someone who has the time gathering the admins and create a community that will actually use the instance. I will offer the hosting space and create a way to do regular auto updates.

@chris @nolan my instances aren't invite only but they are very sparsely populated. the idea with glitch.social is to keep it running latest master. everyone on there understands that's the deal

@nolan not good. I do participate in other "admin" channels although I am not running anything except for some joke instances to test the bleeding edge.

This will also create a small artificial barrier for newcomer wannabe admins and will eventually create a non-public environment where important decisions are made

@saper The point isn't to keep people out; ideally this instance would still federate and anyone could join the convo. But I'd love to have a Local Timeline somewhere that is all about Mastodon admin stuff and where I can see new features that are coming down the pike.

@nolan for the bleeding edge part @bea was doing that on her dev platform:

@bea

@nolan @bea @Balor thanks chum, yeah the dev instance is for experimental changes that shouldn't go in the main codebase (yet, or possibly ever) anyone I know/trust on here can have write access to the git repo for the instance and I will deploy on request until we have a way to automate that

@nolan Hmm.  There's something I like about that discussion being done as it currently is via the federated hashtag #MastoAdmins, even if it's just a romantic notion.  (Federated groups would be nice but IIRC those aren't a thing, not even in GNU Social.)

(To make hashtag checking more routine, I think I'd like a quick way to access a hashtag view.  The search box is good but I'm thinking a button like the local/federated timeline views)

@nolan Only 2h between this and mastodon.social/@maloki/461393. Woollystrators (thx @kyzh) are dead serious about commitment, I'm impressed! Thx @bea

@shalf @nolan @kyzh we are getting better at organizing! i've had the instance up for a while now because

it's fun this way!

@bea @shalf @nolan I still need to sign up (need proper keyboard for that)
But thanks for hosting us Bea.
Btw if hosting cost ramp up, do give a shout/ let us know how we can help.

@kyzh welcome! and yeah if the money thing becomes a problem i'll start a discussion about how to deal with it. for now i just consider it a fair price for the good time i'm having (:
