🎺.☕️ guide for new Mastodon users!

- Toots are tweets, it's fun to say
- The Local timeline contains only toots from this instance
- The Federated timeline contains local toots PLUS toots from anyone else in the fediverse who is followed by at least one person on this instance and is not blocked
- The more people you follow, the more toots will show up in your "Home" view which eventually becomes the primary thing you use
- Paste a URL into the Search box to easily follow/boost/reply

Moar 🎺.☕️ Mastodon tips!

A toot has 4 privacy settings, which you can configure by clicking the globe:

- Public
- Public, but not on the local/federated timeline (good for stuff you don't think is general interest, I make this my default)
- Private to followers
- Private only to those mentioned in the toot (DM)

You can add a Content Warning (CW) for things like trigger warnings, politics, stuff that may not be of general interest, and (my fav) punchlines! The next toot shows a CW in action:

@strevat Oh yeah, good time to mention:

Mastodon has a bug where if you reply to a CW you need to un-tick CW again. C'mon folks we are webdevs, we can fix this thing: github.com/tootsuite/mastodon

@nolan very much enjoy this. Hope I can help!

Even moar 🎺.☕️ tips!

Cool tooters to follow (yes we say tooters):

- mastodon.social/@sarahjeong
- mastodon.social/@bcrypt
- mastodon.social/@plsburydoughb
- witches.town/@Alda
- witches.town/@sophia
- toot.cat/@polymerwitch

If you "remote follow" someone on another instance, the UI is a bit awkward for security reasons, but if you paste the URL into the Search then it tends to be a bit easier. This applies to toots as well.

@nolan For the URL search you _need_ to add https://, otherwise you should write it as “@polymerwith@toot.cat” for search to work.

@surma Ah good point, yes you can just type at-username-at-url into the search and that works fine to find people. But the full URL works too!

@nolan How do boosts work in this sort of setting? If I boost someone's private tweet, what happens?

@Salomao You cannot boost private toots. But you can fav them! You can also fav DMs. 😁

@nolan is there a reason why replies/timelines/etc often don't load from my instance? Proxy lagging? Instant-federation not coded up yet?

@will Yes you don't always see *remote* favs/boosts/etc., see my thread trying to explain this: twitter.com/nolanlawson/status
